Let Me Tell You About My Husband. And Marriage.

Tuesday, January 12, 2016

Today is Bryan's birthday. He is 29.

He would be so embarrassed if he knew I was writing a post about him. He is good and humble, and hates a lot of attention. (I've specifically been instructed NOT to throw him a 30th birthday party next year under any circumstances.)

Bryan's family moved to Colorado from Texas a few months before mine did. We never went to school together, but met in youth group at church. Actually I take that back. I don't remember meeting him, but I do remember the first time I saw him, and I specifically remember thinking (in my 13-year-old very practical head), "If I had to marry any boy in this room, it would be him." Oh goodness. When my parents told me we were moving from Oklahoma to Colorado, my little world basically ended. I was not new to moving, but being in the 8th grade and really needing my friends made it a lot harder. I remember my Dad trying to make me feel better by saying something along the lines of "Maybe you will meet the boy you will grow up to marry." (It didn't work, I probably just started crying and stormed off mumbling something about how there were plenty of boys in Oklahoma to marry.)

So anyways. Bryan was the cute boy in youth group. SO cute. I believe the word we frequently used was "hot" but I digress. He was quiet but a good leader, and played baseball, which I liked. I had a crush on him on and off for the next few years (along with a few other boys) but never even halfway expected for him to like me back.

To make this long, fairly cheesy story short, Bryan did (for some strange reason) take an interest during my junior year of high school, we started dating (a little over 11 years ago), and the rest is history.

(I tried to find an old photo of us and this was the best I could do on short notice. Freshmen/Sophomore year. Also, the titles and captions of my early Facebook albums are 100% embarrassing.)

I remember teachers, friends, and other adults telling me that our relationship wouldn't last....you know, that we would both change too much and want to date other people. That maybe we should take a break from each other....experience life on our own. We ignored them for the most part, aside from a two week breakup in college (that made me feel like I was missing my arm), and eventually got married a few months after I turned 21 and Bryan had graduated from college.

I never, for a second, had cold feet, and didn't think a thing of it when we walked down the aisle.

BUT. Since then, in the last six years, I would be lying if I said that I haven't questioned if those people who warned us were right more than a few times. Marriage is....not hard, but it forces compromise, selflessness, and forgiveness. I could go all Christian on you and say it forces you to be like Jesus, which is true, but we've all heard that sermon. It forces you to look at the ugliest parts of yourself, and unfortunately tempts you to look at the ugliest parts of your spouse. You all know this, I'm sure.

The wonderful thing about marriage and all of its challenges is that you get to keep trying. And you get to try with this person that you picked. And if you picked a good one, you get to learn and grow and experience a beautiful, ordinary life that is full of huge ups and deep downs but that you weather together because you've learned to try together.

I am realizing more and more each day and each year that most of my qualms with Bryan and with our marriage are no fault of his but are faults of my heart and my perspective. That could sound really crappy for me, but really, when considering the importance of my marriage, it's the best thing I could know. (And I am constantly learning this, there is no end to my flaws.)

I picked a good person and have always known it. You guys. Bryan is a good, good man. He helps me without being asked to, he is the first out of bed and home after it's dark and bathes the kids and puts them to bed and does the dishes each and every night. He is calm and genuine and refuses to be jealous or petty. He is a better, more patient parent than I ever could be and is always content with what he has. He is so sensitive to me and to what I feel and to what I am struggling with. He gives me so much grace.

We have been through a series of highs and lows throughout our relationship (I'd like to think there have been much more of the first and much less of the latter), and I pray for many, many more. The highs are fun and the lows make us stronger, and teach us to love harder. We are in a nice little high right now, so things are easy and low-key and I am so thankful, but mostly, I am thankful for this man I married. He has taught me so much and loves me so well and I am so grateful to God for creating him and for him being born on this day, 29 years ago.

Happy Birthday, Bryan! Thank you for loving me. And for giving me some really cute kids.

Two Years.

Happy Anniversary to my best friend in the whole world. I still remember seeing you that first day of youth group (about 10 years ago) and casually thinking to my 13-year-old self, "Well, if I could marry anyone in this room, it would be him", haha! Little did I know that this simple and silly thought would actually come true! I am so thankful that God chose you for me! You are the most genuine and caring person that I know and I have loved being your wife these past two years. May our future together be filled with sweet memories, random adventures, never-ending laughter, and lots of babies.
 Love you so much.

Okay, done with the mushy. Have a great week!

Lately.

I am happy to say that our Memorial Day weekend proved to be a successful one. A picture-less one (my apologies), but still very memorable.
We did a whole lot of....nothing. And it was amazing. Much needed.

Well, I guess I'm lying. We didn't do anything fun with other people (we've decided to take on a hermit lifestyle), but we did have a lot of fun at home by ourselves doing house projects, watching movies, shopping, and reading.

Is it bad that I can't even remember what I did on Friday? Let's see...........oh! Ok, I remember. Well, as I pointed out in my last post, Bryan began the ever-messy process of tiling the master bathroom. I began the ever-relaxing process of reading my new book. Haha, kidding. Kinda. I read all Friday afternoon and then spent ohhhhhh 4 hours cleaning the house. Yes, just four. But it is VERY clean now. Like deep clean. And I was able to reorganize our pantry as well as all of the kitchen cabinets. AND I put down shelf-liner (long overdue), AND I cleaned out and reorganized the fridge. Point, Katy.

On Saturday, Bryan headed to graduation for LHS, I cleaned some more, and then we both spent the day doing pretty much nothing. I read, Bryan played video games, we ordered pizza, and it was perfect.

On Sunday, Bryan got up early (like 6am early) and went golfing with a couple of coaches from LHS. We skipped church. I know, bad. Anyway, we met up for lunch (after my trip to TJ Maxx) and then headed into town to buy all of our supplies/decor for the master bedroom! Exciting stuff. Bryan especially loved the decor part (that was probably the most sarcastic comment I've ever made in my life). Plans are coming along nicely, and even look somewhat like the inspiration board I showed you a few months ago:

Speaking of inspiration...I was going through my StumbleUpon today (Don't know what StumbleUpon is? Well, I suggest you jump on the wagon, because you are definitely missing out), and came across this master of all craft websites: Craft Gawker. I cannot wait to do some of these projects!

And back to our weekend summary:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Sunday night, we went to see "Water for Elephants"...so good! I have to say, usually I like the book a whole lot more than the movie, but this time I was equally satisfied with both! After the movie, we came home where a lot more of nothing was done (or not done?)....Bryan played more video games, and I finished my book! Sobbing. Can I just say that while Firefly Lane is one of my new favorites, it is also the one book that has made me cry more than other book I have ever read? Ok, I'm saying it. I think I bawled for 2 hours. Seriously. But it's so good! I can't stop thinking about the characters. Everyone should read it, just grab a box of tissues for the last oooooh, 100 pages or so.

On Monday we both got back to work--I did some more shopping, some of which included grocery shopping so it was necessary :), pulled weeds in the flower beds, and Bryan started painting the bathroom! Hallelujah.

And here is what we have today:

Still a definite work in progress, but I am already so excited for it! I can't wait to show the final results.

We also went to see "The Hangover Part II" on Monday night with a few of the other coaches. It was funny...but very unoriginal and extremely disgusting. I was a little disappointed, but I kind of expected it with a sequel.

I also thought I should mention the "tease" we got tonight. I could have sworn it was going to storm. It looked so promising:

Guess not. We need rain SO bad. I don't think we've had a good rain (or any rain) since September.

Well, that's pretty much it! Can't wait to show you all our pretty new master bedroom and bathroom!!

The Bathroom is DONE!

Monday, February 28, 2011

Well, kinda. There are still a few spots on the cabinets that need to be touched up, but due to the fact that my sister is getting here TODAY (we're all about the spontaneous visits in the Carter/Roberts family), we decided to clean the bathroom up and call it good.

Here is what we did in this space:
-Ripped up the old linoleum tile
-Put down new, pretty, neutral ceramic tile
-Put a fresh coat of white paint on the cabinets
-Repainted the baseboards and trim
-Touched up the wall paint (that we should have done oh...10 months ago)

And I'm loving how it's turned out!

Here's a quick "before" of the gross blue/green/gray discolored peel-and-stick tiles (and chipped cabinets):

And here's the "after"!

I LOVE the tile! Bryan did such a great job!!

I love fresh coats of paint....these were pretty bad and now they look brand new and so much more clean.

Yay for pretty bathrooms!

Now onto the next project, haha.

P.S. I also wanted to mention that Bryan's JV team placed 1ST in a 2A Varsity Baseball Tournament this past weekend! I didn't go since it was out of town, but I am so happy for him!

I'm so excited for Julie to get here, she's staying till Thursday and it will be so fun!!! Happy Monday and have a great week!

I am linking to The Shabby Nest and Miss Mustard Seed!

The BIG 2-4 and Something Sweet

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

Hi everyone!

I would like to make today's post special for my sweet husband. He is the most genuine person I know and he makes me laugh every day (not to mention he is quite good with home improvement projects). I am SO thankful for him and everything he has brought to my life. So...happy 24th birthday Bryan!! I am so excited to see what your 24th year holds for the two of us (or, I guess he's beginning his 25th year...yikes, he's old!). I love you!!

(Um, yes. The oreo cake is genius.)
Sadley, Bryan and I won't be together for his birthday (this is the 6th, yes sixth year that this has happened), because he has to go to coaching camp for baseball....sad day. But we plan on celebrating with a cake and everything when he gets back!!

In honor of Bryan's birthday, I have chosen to share one of his all-time favorite dessert recipes: Chocolate Chip Cookies! My mother-in-law, Judy, gave me this recipe last summer and I will be forever grateful! We've made these approximately 129,294,345 times since then and now you can too!

Ingredients: (Makes about 32 cookies)

-2 1/4 cups flour
-3/4 cups sugar
-3/4 cups light brown sugar
-1 tsp salt
-1 tsp baking soda
-1 tsp vanilla extract
-2 sticks of butter, softened
-2 eggs
-1 cup chocolate chips

(that was all from memory, yessssss)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix all ingredients in a large mixing bowl.

Place on greased baking sheet and bake for 9-10 minutes or until golden brown.

Enjoy!!

I can have a batch of these in the oven in 10 minutes--they are so easy to make so you have no excuse not to try them!

I would also like to take this moment to make a belated birthday shout-out to my Aunt Kathy (I told you I would do it!! *insert evil laugh here*). Happy **th Birthday, Kathy!! Sorry I forgot!! Love you!

Merry Merry!!

Sunday, December 26, 2010

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas! We are hanging out at the Roberts and having a wonderful time! I've been hearing stories about Christmas with this family for YEARS, so I was very excited to participate this year. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed! We have had so much fun and I am so grateful to have such amazing in-laws.

Christmas Day went by in a blur, but it started out with the traditional Christmas morning and Santa visit. We all came downstairs to find and unwrap our many gifts. It. Was. Awesome. Everyone was spoiled to death with so many pretty things! Some of Bryan's gifts included a new driver, "work" clothes (a.k.a sweats), and golf shoes. He also opened my gift to him...a new table saw! Let's hear it for future home improvement projects haha! I opened SO many great things too--new books, clothes, jewelry, a Anthropologie candle (LOVE), kitchen gadgets and platters, and a Vera Bradley weekender bag and wallet! Bryan also surprised me with a gift card to get a new purse! (something that I have apparently mentioned the need for a few times.)

The parents and grandparents got a chance to open their gifts as well. I had to mention this because the sweetest moment took place when Nana (Bryan's grandma) teared up after opening her new Kindle. She was so taken by surprise and so grateful that she just couldn't help it and it was possibly my favorite memory from the day--I think all of us got a little choked up!

The Roberts also do a really fun tradition after everyone has opened all of their presents. "Santa" hides letters in the tree that are addressed to each kid with a poem that hints to one final present. This was so much fun to do and is something I know Bryan and I will incorporate into Christmas morning for our kids! We took turns reading our clues and then set off around the house to find our gifts. Bryan and I found ours in the basement but we brought them upstairs to open up in front of everyone. I have mentioned a time or two (or maybe more than that haha) that I have been lacking a camera of decent quality. Well, since I have the best family in the world I was SO happy to find out that my final gift was a Canon Rebel XSI!!  Bryan was also very surprised and so excited to open up a new laptop (!!), and spent the rest of the morning playing on it while I read the manual for my new camera and took approximately 344589243598 pictures. No joke.

Here are a few pictures of the rest of the day (courtesy of my new, amazing camera):

Bryan with his new toy (thanks so much Alisha, I will now be swatting this helicopter away for the next 6 months). Kidding!

Abby and I have matching cameras!! Ah, look at that clarity....I am never going back to normal cameras again.

Practicing a few landscape shots. Such a pretty Christmas Day!!

Sweet Judy serving our delicious breakfast!

The first of many details shots....yummy food! (my camera makes it look so pretty)

Haha I was going through my pictures and laughed when I saw this of Pop! I think Bryan took this haha. Playing with Nerf guns...silly man. This picture basically summarizes what the boys did ALL morning!

I have a gap between morning and evening pictures because we all headed upstairs for naps after all the gift excitement. I also got a chance to talk to my mom who I missed SO much all day as well as the rest of my family. Bryan took a few pictures of me on the phone, but those will never make the blog because they are AWFUL. Anyway, it was good to hear my mom's voice and all the noise going on in the background (I come from a very loud family haha). If you're reading this and are from my side of the family, I love you and thought about you all on Christmas Day!  I can't wait until Bryan and I can be with you all next year!

...And back to this year's Christmas Day:

Mr. Al (the faithful blog reader) on his IPad before dinner.
Getting ready for Christmas dinner...

Desserts!

The table all set for dinner....which was amazing by the way. We had such a good time talking and laughing and Al even got us all choked up with his sweet speech before we ate. (I've learned that I want to cry a lot when I'm with this family...happy tears of course!)

The beautiful Christmas tree!

Bryan playing games...I think everyone was just hanging around the living room at this point (and being my test subjects as I took about a thousand pictures of each of them).

Pop!

The helicopter that has terrorized every member of the family. Gah, I can't get over the picture quality!

I love this one of the Nerf guns and darts. What can I say, I'm a details girl!

This is the non-Cowboys game club. We all hung out upstairs. I think it got pretty intense downstairs, so I steered clear of that (and football bores me to death so of course I found other things to do).

What my future children will look like haha! I've always LOVED this picture!

Ha, more dessert. Homemade cheesecake! Judy was also so thoughtful and made a very tasty chocolate pie since my family always has that at our Christmas. We were eating all day!!

I liked this one of Alisha with her belly. Cute!

I took about a billion of this moment, but this picture was my favorite of the bunch. Judy, Alisha, and Hensley!!

More details...

The bell from the Polar Express. I love how this turned out.

Our day ended with a Chinese Gift Exchange which was a lot of fun and got a little out of control! We all received gift cards to different restaurants, but some people chose to scheme a little bit so they could end up with the gift cards I wanted.....I'm a little bitter. BUT it was all okay because we get to eat out all month now!

I love this one of Nana and Pop.

After the game we all headed to the basement to watch Despicable Me, which was SO cute!!!

So that about does it for our Christmas. I really missed being with my family, but am so thankful that I have Bryan's family who all make me feel right at home. We both are so blessed!

I hope anyone who is reading this had as great of a Christmas as we did! I am a little sad that it's over but can't wait for what the new year will bring!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
